The Most-Missed Concept
Sleeping, Blind & Awakened Planets in Lal Kitab
Three planetary states — jagrut (awakened), soya (sleeping), and andha (blind) — that describe whether a planet in your chart is actually functional or merely present. This is the framework that explains why a Vedically “strong” planet often delivers nothing, and why a “weak” one sometimes shines.
This is the single most-missed concept by people who come to Lal Kitab from a Vedic background. They look at a chart, see Jupiter in its own sign, and conclude “Jupiter is strong, no remedy needed.” Then years go by and Jupiter delivers nothing — no wisdom, no marriage support, no financial gains. The reason is that the Jupiter, while Vedically strong, is sleeping in Lal Kitab terms. It has potential but no functional aspect. The remedy is to wake it up — not to ignore it.
Read this page once and you will understand why some upays produce visible results within weeks while others seem to fail. The failure is rarely in the upay itself; it is almost always in the functional state of the planet being addressed. A sleeping planet’s upay must first wake it up before it can deliver. A blind planet’s upay must restore consistency. An awakened planet may need no upay at all.
The Three States — A Visual Summary
Awakened
The planet sits in its own permanent house in Lal Kitab’s 12 fixed houses. It is alert, functional, and delivers full results — both blessings and lessons.
Example: Sun in the 1st house, Moon in the 4th house, Saturn in the 10th or 11th, Jupiter in the 9th. These planets need no upay; they work on their own.
Upay needed: None routinely; minimal maintenance only.
Sleeping
The planet sits in a non-dominating house with no aspects from other planets. It has potential but does not act. Neither positive nor corrective results manifest.
Example: Mercury in the 6th house with no aspects, Venus in the 8th house with no conjunctions. The planet exists but is dormant.
Upay needed: An “awakening” upay — specific actions tied to the planet’s nature performed for 43 days to activate it.
Blind
The planet appears strong by day but loses its sight at night, producing inconsistent or unreliable results. Brilliant for a few weeks, silent for years. Unstable.
Example: Sun in the 12th house aspected by Saturn, Moon in the 8th house with Rahu nearby. The planet flickers.
Upay needed: A “steadying” upay to restore consistent vision — usually a longer-than-43-day discipline of grounding practices.
Awakened (Jagrut) Planets — In Detail
A planet is awakened when it sits in its own permanent house in Lal Kitab’s fixed-house system. The 12 fixed houses each have a permanent “owner” planet; when a planet lands in its own house at birth, it is jagrut. Awakened planets give their characteristic results without effort — the Sun gives leadership and authority, the Moon gives emotional steadiness and a peaceful home, Jupiter gives wisdom and faith, Saturn gives disciplined career success.
The advantage of an awakened planet is that it works without remedies. The disadvantage is that corrective results also flow without filter: an awakened malefic in stress also gives harsh lessons without softening. The Lal Kitab maintenance for awakened planets is simply to honour the planet’s natural day — offer water to the Sun if it is awakened, light a lamp for Saturn on Saturday, visit a Shiva temple on Monday for an awakened Moon. No 43-day upay required.
Permanent Houses (Awakening Houses) of Each Planet
| Planet | Permanent House(s) | Awakened Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | 1st, 11th | Authority, leadership, government favour, vitality |
| Moon | 4th | Emotional balance, peaceful home, mother bond |
| Mars | 3rd, 6th, 11th | Courage, victory over enemies, technical excellence |
| Mercury | 4th, 7th | Sharp intellect, business success, communication mastery |
| Jupiter | 5th, 9th, 11th | Wisdom, dharma, finance, scholarly success |
| Venus | 4th, 7th | Marriage harmony, luxury, artistic mastery |
| Saturn | 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th | Career discipline, longevity, technical career success |
| Rahu | 3rd, 6th, 11th | Sudden gains, foreign success, technological wins |
| Ketu | 3rd, 6th, 11th | Spiritual depth, sudden insights, surgical/medical career |
Sleeping (Soya) Planets — In Detail
A planet is sleeping when it sits in a non-dominating house with no aspects from other planets. The classical Lal Kitab definition: a planet aspected by no other planet, and not in its own permanent house, sleeps. It exists in your chart but neither gives results nor takes them away. The signature life-pattern is “nothing happens.” The planet’s significations (marriage for Venus, intellect for Mercury, mother for Moon) neither flourish nor fail — they remain in a kind of suspended animation.
Sleeping planets are extremely common and often overlooked. People run Vedic remedies on what looks like a strong planet and wonder why nothing changes — the planet was simply asleep. The Lal Kitab response is the awakening upay: a specific 43-day action tied to the planet’s essential nature, designed to wake it up. Once awakened, the planet begins functioning, after which other upays (for affliction or rin) can be layered on top.
How To Wake A Sleeping Planet
The awakening upay differs from the standard 43-day affliction upay. For most planets, the awakening involves repeating the planet’s favourite action aloud — saying its mantra, calling its day’s name, or simply repeating the action with verbal acknowledgement instead of silent performance. A few examples:
- Sleeping Sun: Offer water at sunrise saying the offering aloud in Sanskrit: Om Suryaya Namah, then bow once toward the east.
- Sleeping Moon: Offer milk on a Shivling on Monday morning while reciting Om Chandraya Namah 108 times loudly enough to hear yourself.
- Sleeping Mars: Donate red dal while reciting the Hanuman Chalisa aloud in the donation place; feed a monkey saying its name aloud.
- Sleeping Mercury: Donate moong dal while reciting Om Budhaya Namah; speak the donation purpose aloud to the recipient.
- Sleeping Jupiter: Apply saffron tilak while saying its mantra aloud; donate chana dal in a temple with the donation purpose declared.
- Sleeping Venus: Donate white items while reciting Venus mantra; speak to your spouse’s photograph during the upay days.
- Sleeping Saturn: Donate mustard oil with the eye-reflection ritual performed verbally; speak to Shani Dev as you donate.
- Sleeping Rahu / Ketu: The shadow planets are rarely truly sleeping; if so, the awakening is the same as the standard upay — barley for Rahu, dog-feeding for Ketu — performed with verbal acknowledgement.
Blind (Andha) Planets — In Detail
A blind planet is the most psychologically confusing state. The planet appears strong by day but loses its sight at night, producing inconsistent results. The classical signature: a planet sitting in a house where it is normally suffering, but aspected by a benefic that gives it temporary sight. The result is a planet that delivers brilliantly for a few weeks — sudden marriage proposals, a windfall, a career break — then goes completely silent for months or years. Most people misread this as bad luck after good luck; it is actually a single planet flickering between sighted and blind states.
Blind planets are notoriously hard to remedy because the upay must restore consistency, not just strengthen the planet. The Lal Kitab tradition’s response is a longer-than-43-day discipline — usually 90 to 108 days — of grounding practices: the same upay performed at the same hour every day, sometimes twice (morning and evening), often combined with the discipline of the planet’s opposite day (e.g. avoiding harsh speech on Wednesdays for a blind Mercury, even though Wednesday is its “active” day).
Common Blind-Planet Signatures
| Signature | Likely Blind Planet | Life Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Sun in 12th house aspected by Jupiter | Sun | Sudden government job offers that vanish; father’s health stable then crashes |
| Moon in 8th aspected by Venus | Moon | Brilliant emotional weeks followed by months of low mood; mother’s health flickers |
| Mercury in 12th aspected by Mars | Mercury | Sudden business wins followed by sudden losses; speech sharp one week, flat the next |
| Venus in 6th aspected by Jupiter | Venus | Marriage proposals appearing and disappearing; sudden luxury followed by drought |
| Saturn in 1st aspected by Moon | Saturn | Career breakthrough followed by years of stagnation; depression that lifts and returns |
How To Diagnose Your Planet’s State
- Generate your Lal Kitab Kundli — our free calculator shows which house each planet is sitting in and which planets aspect it.
- Check the awakened table above. If your planet sits in its own permanent house, it is awakened. Done. No upay needed unless the planet is also under aspect-stress.
- If the planet is not in a permanent house, check for aspects. A planet aspected by even one other planet is “active” (functioning, neither sleeping nor blind). A planet with no aspects and not in its own house is sleeping.
- If the planet is in a suffering house but receives an aspect from a benefic, it is likely blind — inconsistent. Look at your life-pattern: if results have been flickering brilliantly and silently, blindness is the diagnosis.
- Match the state to the upay type: awakened → no upay; sleeping → awakening upay; blind → grounding 90-day discipline; afflicted → standard 43-day upay from the planet’s page.
Common Mistakes With This Concept
- Confusing “strong” with “awakened.” A Vedically strong planet can still be sleeping. Strength is potential; awakening is function.
- Running standard 43-day upay on a sleeping planet. It produces no result because the planet is not awake to receive the action. The awakening upay must come first.
- Misreading a blind planet as “sometimes good, sometimes bad luck.” It is a single planetary state, not chance. The remedy targets the inconsistency itself.
- Stacking upays without diagnosis. Running Sun upay, Moon upay, and Mars upay simultaneously when only one is sleeping just dissipates discipline. Diagnose first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a planet move between states?
The birth state is fixed. But planetary transits (especially of Jupiter and Saturn) can temporarily activate a sleeping planet for the duration of the transit, and then it returns to sleep. This is one of the reasons certain dasha periods produce sudden results that vanish when the dasha ends.
Is the awakening upay a one-time act or repeated annually?
For a deeply sleeping planet, the awakening upay is usually performed annually for two to three years until the planet is genuinely active. After that, the planet’s normal day-of-the-week observance is enough.
Does the awakening upay always work?
It works on the discipline-side reliably — you build the habit of attending to that planet’s nature for 43 days. Whether the planet then visibly “wakes up” in your life depends on the cleanness of your performance and the depth of the original sleeping pattern. Most people see visible shifts within two cycles.
What is the difference between a sleeping planet and an absent planet?
No planet is absent — all 9 planets exist somewhere in every chart. A “sleeping” planet is one that is present but functionally dormant. The diagnosis is from the chart, not from your felt experience alone.
Should I consult an astrologer for state diagnosis?
For straightforward sleeping/awakened diagnosis, our calculator handles it automatically. For nuanced blind-planet diagnosis — particularly when multiple planets are involved — a consultation with Dr. Kashyap or Sushama can save months of misaimed upay.
Why does Vedic astrology not use this concept?
Vedic Parashari astrology uses different functional categories (lord of houses, exaltation, debilitation, combustion, dignity). Lal Kitab’s sleeping/blind/awakened framework is a parallel diagnostic tool specific to its 12-fixed-houses system. The two systems can co-exist but should not be conflated.
