What is a dosha in Vedic astrology?
Doshas are diagnostic labels: a dosha tells you which planetary energy is out of balance and in which area of life its friction is most likely to show up. The three most commonly discussed doshas are:
- Mangal Dosha (Kuja Dosha): Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house — associated with friction in marriage and partnerships.
- Kaal Sarp Dosha: All seven visible planets hemmed between Rahu and Ketu — associated with obstacles, delays and karmic intensity.
- Sade Sati: Saturn transiting over your natal Moon sign (and the sign before and after) — a 7.5-year period associated with discipline, challenge and transformation.
The Lal Kitab difference: affordable remedies for every dosha
Every dosha calculator on this site includes the Lal Kitab remedy alongside the Vedic one. Lal Kitab (written by Pandit Roop Chand Joshi in 19th-century Punjab) prescribes no gemstones, no elaborate rituals, no Kumbh Vivah — only simple 43-day upay that a household can perform at home, almost free of cost.
The three major doshas explained
Mangal Dosha — the most feared, most misunderstood
Mangal Dosha is widely feared because it is said to bring friction and instability to marriage. The fear is real; the nuance is usually missing. Mangal Dosha is cancelled in a significant number of charts — when Mars is in its own sign, when both partners are Manglik, when Jupiter aspects Mars, or for specific ascendants. Our Mangal Dosha calculator checks all three charts (Lagna, Moon, Venus) and flags cancellation factors automatically.
The standard Vedic remedy — Kumbh Vivah or red coral — has no equivalent in Lal Kitab. The Lal Kitab upay for Mars is: donate red masoor on Tuesdays, offer sweets at a Hanuman temple, feed monkeys, keep non-quarrelsome relations with brothers and spouse — performed for 43 continuous days.
Kaal Sarp Dosha — the shadow-planet hemming
Kaal Sarp Dosha forms when all seven visible planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — fall on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis, with no planet “outside” the shadow. There are 12 distinct types, named after serpents in the classical texts (Anant, Kulik, Vasuki … Sheshnag), each with different effects depending on which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy. Lal Kitab’s remedies for Rahu and Ketu are consistently affordable: flowing a coconut in running water, donating barley, keeping silver, and feeding dogs.
Sade Sati — Saturn’s 7.5-year transit
Sade Sati is not technically a birth-chart dosha — it is a transit event. Saturn takes approximately 2.5 years to move through each sign, so when it moves through the sign before your Moon, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after, the combined transit totals 7.5 years. Sade Sati has three phases: rising (Saturn approaches), peak (Saturn sits on the natal Moon) and setting (Saturn moves away). The peak phase is traditionally the most intense, but the overall experience is highly individual — Saturn well-placed in the natal chart often makes Sade Sati a period of disciplined growth rather than suffering. Lal Kitab’s remedy for Saturn: donate mustard oil on Saturdays, feed crows and dogs, light a mustard-oil lamp, serve labourers.
