Daily Muhurat · 8 Day + 8 Night
Choghadiya Today — Day & Night Muhurat Table
The complete 16-period Choghadiya for any date and location — with Amrit, Shubh, Labh auspicious windows and Udveg, Kaal, Rog inauspicious windows clearly marked. Pick the right hour to start any important activity.
Choghadiya for your date & city
Unlike Rahu Kaal which only tells you what to avoid (one ~90-minute window each day), Choghadiya gives you the full positive picture — which hour is best, second-best, third-best for your activity. That is why families have used it for generations to decide everything from when to leave the house for a wedding to when to sign a property deed.
The 7 Choghadiya Names — What Each Means
Amrit
The most auspicious. Literally “nectar.” Ideal for any major beginning — business launch, marriage ceremony, important travel, signing of contracts, medical surgery.
Shubh
Literally “auspicious.” Excellent for ceremonies, religious activities, starting education, taking new responsibilities, beginning a fast or vow.
Labh
Literally “gain” or “profit.” Best for business deals, signing of partnerships, financial transactions, opening accounts, salary negotiations.
Chal
Literally “move.” Neither auspicious nor inauspicious. Workable for routine travel and movement — commuting, errands, return journeys. Avoid for major launches if Amrit/Shubh/Labh is within reach.
Udveg
Literally “anxiety.” Avoid for any new beginning. Acceptable for government work, dealing with authorities, military and administrative tasks where Udveg’s assertive energy is useful.
Kaal
Literally “time/death.” Strongly avoid for new ventures, marriages, business openings, important meetings. Acceptable only for routine tasks already in progress.
Rog
Literally “disease.” Strongly avoid for travel, surgery, health-related decisions, signing of medical contracts. Use only for routine continuation tasks.
The First Choghadiya of Each Weekday
The Choghadiya sequence rotates predictably. The first period after sunrise depends on the weekday; the remaining 7 day periods and 8 night periods follow a fixed cyclical order. Knowing the first Choghadiya tells you the entire day’s pattern.
| Weekday | First Choghadiya (after sunrise) | Quick Read |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Udveg | Inauspicious morning — wait for the second period (Chal) |
| Monday | Amrit | Most auspicious morning — ideal for important launches at sunrise |
| Tuesday | Rog | Inauspicious morning — major activities should wait until Udveg or later |
| Wednesday | Labh | Excellent business morning — the classic Mercury-ruled trading day |
| Thursday | Shubh | Auspicious morning — great for ceremonies, religious activities |
| Friday | Chal | Neutral morning — workable for travel and routine activities |
| Saturday | Kaal | Inauspicious morning — Saturday is generally consulted carefully |
How To Use Choghadiya Day-to-Day
For Travel & Journeys
Pick Amrit, Shubh, Labh, or Chal for the time you actually leave the house. Once travel is in progress, the ongoing Choghadiya does not matter — the start is what counts. For long-distance journeys, also avoid leaving during Rahu Kaal (see our Rahu Kaal calculator).
For Business & Transactions
Use Labh (the gain Choghadiya) for any financial activity — signing partnership agreements, opening bank accounts, large purchases, salary negotiations. Amrit for major launches; Shubh for ceremonies around the business (an opening puja, for example).
For Marriage & Ceremonies
Marriage muhurat ideally falls in Amrit or Shubh. Most pandits combine Choghadiya with the deeper Abhijit Muhurta check and the avoidance of Rahu Kaal to triple-confirm a muhurat.
For Daily Important Calls & Meetings
Pick any of the three auspicious Choghadiyas (Amrit/Shubh/Labh) for first-time meetings, job interviews, or important phone calls. Existing relationships during Chal are fine; new conversations during Kaal or Rog tend to set the wrong tone.
How Choghadiya is Calculated
The calculation is geometric, not arbitrary:
- Find the local sunrise time and sunset time for the date and location.
- Divide daylight (sunrise to sunset) into 8 equal periods — these are the 8 day Choghadiyas.
- Divide night (sunset to next sunrise) into 8 equal periods — these are the 8 night Choghadiyas.
- Apply the weekday cycle to name each period in sequence (the sequence rotates predictably: Udveg, Chal, Labh, Amrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog, then repeats).
Because daylight length varies by date and latitude, the Choghadiya duration also varies. In a typical North Indian summer day Choghadiyas are ~100 minutes long; in winter they shrink to ~80 minutes. Our calculator handles all of this from Prokerala’s precise astronomical engine.
Choghadiya vs Rahu Kaal vs Muhurta — When To Use Which
| Tool | What It Tells You | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Choghadiya | All 16 daily periods classified into auspicious/neutral/inauspicious | Picking the best window for any activity. The everyday muhurat tool. |
| Rahu Kaal | The single most inauspicious ~90-min window each day (plus Yamaganda, Gulika) | Knowing what to avoid. Don’t start anything new during Rahu Kaal. |
| Muhurta | The deeper auspicious windows — Abhijit, Amrit Kaal, Brahma Muhurta | Marriage muhurat, major ceremonies, surgeries. The premium tool. |
| Daily Panchang | The full daily detail — tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, sunrise/sunset | Complete daily reference. Use alongside the above. |
Common Mistakes With Choghadiya
- Checking only the day Choghadiya and ignoring the night. If your activity starts after sunset, you need the night Choghadiya, which has its own 8-period sequence.
- Confusing Chal with Kaal. Chal is neutral and workable. Kaal is the “death” period and should be avoided. The two names look similar — read carefully.
- Treating Choghadiya as overriding everything. Choghadiya works alongside Rahu Kaal avoidance. Don’t do something during Rahu Kaal just because it’s “Amrit Choghadiya” — the simultaneous Rahu Kaal cancels the benefit.
- Forgetting the location. Sunrise time varies by city, so Choghadiya for Mumbai is not the same as Delhi. Always use the calculator with your actual location.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Choghadiya for marriage?
Amrit Choghadiya is the most auspicious for marriage — the “nectar” period. Shubh is the second-best. Most pandits also overlay Abhijit Muhurta (the universally auspicious window around solar noon) for triple-confirmation. Run our muhurta calculator alongside this one for the full marriage-timing check.
Can I start a journey during Chal Choghadiya?
Yes — Chal literally means “movement” and is considered ideal for travel. It is the one neutral-but-positive Choghadiya specifically associated with journeys. Many traditions actually prefer Chal over Amrit for ordinary travel because Amrit is reserved for more momentous beginnings.
What if all the auspicious Choghadiyas fall during my work hours?
This is common. If you cannot reschedule, pick the closest auspicious Choghadiya to your actual start time and use that moment to mentally “begin” the activity (place the first call, sign the first document, or stand at the threshold). The Vedic principle is that intention timed to the muhurat matters more than the full duration.
Is Choghadiya different for vegetarians and non-vegetarians?
No. Choghadiya is a time-based system independent of diet, faith, or background. The same Amrit Choghadiya is auspicious for everyone in that location at that moment.
Why does my Choghadiya look different from the one in my local newspaper?
Newspaper Choghadiyas are usually calculated for a fixed regional centre (often Delhi or Mumbai). Your actual location may shift sunrise by 15-40 minutes, which shifts all Choghadiya boundaries. Always use a location-aware calculator like this one for accuracy.
Should I avoid all activity during Rog Choghadiya?
Avoid new beginnings during Rog, especially anything health-related. Continuation of ongoing work is fine; routine errands are fine. Medical decisions, surgeries, signing of medical contracts, and health-related travel are best deferred.
